Everyone within the Barbershop Society is committed to encouraging new comers to our hobby.
Taunton Barbershop Harmony Club is particularly interested in welcoming any male, irrespective of age who would like to see what it is like to sing with us.
We currently have an age range in our membership from 10 years to 90 years of age.
Our hope is that we can encourage and help you to sing within our 4 part close harmony chorus and then to join the T.B.H.C. Here are a few reasons why you should join. |
|
· Singing is good for you There is no doubt of that. However, you may though, have self doubts about whether you can do it and that is understandable. The answer is you probably can but you will not know until you try.
· For Friendship Many who join our club have never sung before in public or with anyone else. Some have come with experience and a history of singing Barbershop or another form of choral singing. It does not matter; we will help and encourage all who show interest and enthusiasm for a cappella 4 part harmony barbershop music. It is the friendship that makes barbershop clubs and choruses unique; it is part of our culture.
· To Learn Of course you do need to be able to repeat a note to sing in a chorus. To discover this we do not make anyone stand alone for a voice test or audition. All we would do is listen discreetly for a while as our newcomer stands on the risers alongside us whilst we sing one of the easier songs which we would give you time to learn. No one would expect anyone new to Barbershop to know too much at the beginning. We have sheet music to loan to members, and teach tapes. These are professionally produced tapes of sung tunes in the part with which a chorus member sings. With 4 part close harmony Barbershop you can chose to sing a part with which you feel comfortable, and suits your voice. Not all can sing the high notes of a Tenor, the melody of a Lead, the skilful Baritone which knits the chords together or the rich notes of the Bass.
· For Support There will always be a warm welcome from the Chorus, the section of your suiting, tenor, lead, baritone or bass. Support would come from the chorus member we choose to accompany you until you are fully confident. That time will vary according to an individual and his experience. There is help to improve skills available from section leaders, music directors, chorus directors or anyone in the chorus, you will never walk alone.
· To Perform Then when a new member of the chorus has learnt a few songs he can join us on public performances. Each year we compete in Barbershop competition at national level. Chorus members have the opportunity to attend Harmony College over a weekend usually at Worcester in August. All these events allow a Barbershopper to experience the creative and the social world we all enjoy. All this is not compulsory but once someone has learnt a few “polecat” songs, those we all know, you can sing with Barbershoppers worldwide.
· For Teaching T.B.H.C. is committed to helping anyone interested in singing Barbershop. We wish to increase the size of our Chorus. We have, in the past, successfully run a 12 week learning course and package which was sponsored by grants and funds. We hope to do it again soon. We are committed to improving an individuals skills and the quality of the Chorus overall. However we never loose sight of the fact that Barbershop is a hobby and so we sing for pleasure and enjoyment. |
