British Association Of Barbershop Singers (BABS) Quartet Exploration Day – South West Region

Bishop Henderson School, Henderson Close, Taunton

Saturday 2nd November 2013

Eleven members of Taunton’s Rivertones Harmony Chorus attended this one-off event – the third of a programme of regional events – at which some of the country’s top voice coaches worked with nearly forty members of BABS from all over the South West.

Coaching was provided by several previous gold medal quartet members and Chorus Directors from both the Men’s and Ladies’ Associations and the BABS National Quartet Development Officer Richard Curtis. The programme was devised to give confidence to anyone who wanted to improve their confidence and singing skills within a quartet or octet environment – knowledge which would also be beneficial to take back to the chorus as a whole. It was also an opportunity for any new or inexperienced quartets (or single singers) who wanted to take the opportunity of being professionally coached and gain individual help and knowledge on how they can achieve their goals. The group had to learn a completely new song – ‘If I Had My Way’- prior to attending the event through the help of individual voice teach tracks (Lead, Bass, Baritone and Tenor) and the aid of a ‘virtual’ chorus, put together by Peter Nugent, a quartet gold medallist and a faculty member of BABS Directors College and also on the faculty of BABS Harmony College in the Quartet coaching stream
